President’s Message, October 2018

Dear Rotarians and friends,

About 30 years ago, over 1,000 children were affected by the devastating polio virus on a daily, often weekly and monthly basis in many countries of the world. In our resilience and eager to make a difference in the lives of children, Rotarians all over the world
have made sincere efforts to end this virus from the surface of the earth, day by day, week by week, and months by months by waging a war against this virus.
We have successfully celebrated milestones state after state, country after country, and regions after region- and every country celebrates whenever they are declared polio-free. For example, Nigeria has been declared polio free for the past 2 years- millions of Nigerian children together with others around the world are vaccinated every year- thanks to Rotarians, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, World Health Organization and other spirited organizations for making this possible.
Happily we are close to ending polio as the number of countries keeps decreasing every day. Let’s remember that there is so much work to do, we can do more for this cause, and the best way to do it by donating our treasures to Rotary Foundation.
This great month- October, I remind each and every one of us the solemn need to END POLIO NOW by not only joining 1.2 million Rotarians in celebrating the World Polio Day on October 24, but also in engaging in polio awareness, and advocacy visits to crème la crème in the society, and most importantly in donating and encouraging our friends and well-wishers to Give to the Rotary foundation. Anyone can give to this cause, no amount is too small.  Giving is not an exclusive right of the Rich.
I thank immensely all of us that have made efforts to create awareness and advocate their friends and family to join this global fight through various social media platforms. Our club-Rotary Club of Owerri Metropolitan is unique, as each of us are inspired to donate to this cause, and I am particularly happy at the level of our commitment so far, as I encourage each and every one of us to do more, so that more children can be protected from this virus.
Let’s take inspirational advantage of this challenge and good spiritedness from Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation- for every dollar raised through Rotary family, the Gates Foundation will march it with two more. Let’s join hands to eradicate polio from the face of the earth as we continue to ‘Be the Inspiration’ in promoting a polio-free world.
With assurance of prayers and Best Wishes,
Ethelbert Obinna Umeh
President, Rotary Club of Owerri Metropolitan 2018-19
