Top 5 Tips for Public Speaking

Growing UP, I knew of a boy who was rarely given a chance to speak, even in our class. Not because he was hated, but they thought they were saving him from embarrassing himself with his stammering, since he was laughed at every time he tried to sp-sp-speak. It killed his self esteem, I lacked confidence because that boy was me. I felt like I had to work twice as hard to fulfill the dream of becoming a MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKER.
MY STORY: FROM THE LOW SELF ESTEEM OF A STAMMERING BOY TO AN INTERNATIONAL PUBLIC SPEAKER.
Today the same boy speaks with
confidence before American & African presidents, before European Prime ministers & Royal families, before Ministers & Ambassadors.
HERE ARE THE TIPS.
01. SPEAK WITH AN INTENT to move people to action, I usually start with sharing something to connect with the audience. For instance... A personal story or Facts that are relatable to masses, then narrow down to the area of focus.
02. USE STORY TELLING where possible.
People will easily remember stories than power point slides. Develop the stories as attention grabbers. I sometimes use few people in the audience for good examples, trust me, it works.
03. STRUCTURE YOUR SPEECH IN A SIMPLE FORM. E.g.
a) Present the introduction of your agenda.
b) Present your agenda.
c) Present a recap & way forward (of what you have just presented)
04. PREPARE & PRACTICE
Rehearse out loud with all equipment you plan on using. Work to control filler words like ummh... so... ladies and gentlemen ... etc; Practice, pause and breathe. Use a clock to check your timings and allow time for the unexpected.
05. GET MORE EXPERIENCE
I was more afraid of NOT becoming a public speaker than I was afraid of being laughed at, you have to reach this level. So I had to fight my fears and I took every opportunity I could get to speak (and listen to other speakers). Experience builds confidence, which is the key to effective speaking.
YOU CAN ALSO REWRITE YOUR STORY. WHAT GRACE CAN DO. - The movement.
ALL THE BEST.
